Many people these days are asking what is the best investment for retirement and wanting to know if the IUL is the best way to go for retirement.
I’ve got the most amazing chart to show you that will most likely amaze you.
Recently BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, conducted a research study to determine which asset classes performed the best over the past 20 years, AND… to see how the “Average American Investor” managed their own investments, compared to these top asset classes. Really good stuff.
Do you want to guess which asset class performed #1, on an average annual basis, over the past 20 years? I bet you guessed correctly. It’s OIL. Yep, oil as an asset class, has averaged an 8.6% average annual return and took the #1 spot. Homes came in last place at only 2.3%.
So where do you think; (a) Inflation came in and, (b) where did the average investor come in?
Inflation came in at 2.6% over the past 20 years. But what about our “average” investor? How did he do?
In a word, TERRIBLE! The average investor came in DEAD LAST! He only averaged 2.1% over the past 20 years! Yikes. That is appalling. The average investor did not even keep up with inflation.
So I have one more question for you.
If the “average investor” only averaged an average annual return on his investments of 2.1%, how the heck is he going to be able to save enough for retirement?
The answer is… He is NOT. He can’t even keep up with inflation, so he is losing ground each year. Going backwards. Ouch. Not good. How can he even think about retirement if he is going backwards each year?
Here’s what’s good!
I pulled the numbers going back 24 years to see how our flagship Barefoot Retirement Plan would have performed by following our often recommended blended index selection.
As a reminder, the blended index is made up of various indexes like the S&P 500 index, the Barclays Capital U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, and others. Each year the cash value of your account gets credited with an amount of interest gain based on the performance of the blended index.
Our plan has a 0% floor and a 17% cap. This means the least you can earn in a year is 0% (so you can never lose money due to market downturns), and the most you can earn is 17% in a given year. We gathered the actual data of all of these indexes to calculate how our program would have performed over the past 24 years.
Guess what? Our program came in #1. Yep, it came in at an average annual return of 9.28%.
Take a look at the chart below and see the results:

Not only did the Barefoot Retirement Plan come in ahead of every single major asset class, but we did it without anywhere near the risk that the other asset classes had. Since our plan is guaranteed in writing, by a hundred plus billion dollar, 120 year old company, not to lose a single penny due to market downturns…. you would not have had anywhere near the stress and worry, that’s often associated with the volatility of most of the other asset classes.

Also, what is not seen on this chart, is the fact that some of these asset classes lost money, or had negative returns in some years. Our program, on the other hand, never lost a cent due to negative market returns. The worst our plan did in a given year is a 0% return, but never lost capital.
You probably remember Warren Buffett’s #1 rule for investing, right? It is, Never Lose Money. Losing money can kill your returns and take years to recover.
Obviously no one on the planet can predict what our financial future holds nor how the markets will change. Past performance is never a prediction of future results. So there is no way to know for certain how our Barefoot Plan will perform in the future, but I think you have to admit that the past 20 years have been pretty impressive, wouldn’t you say?
